“Small Business Development Centers offer Fortune 500 resources to small businesses across the country,” said Rebecca Lobina, regional director of Northwest Missouri State University's Small Business Development Center. “Access to those types of resources is usually unobtainable to the backbone of our economy – small businesses. That’s why our services are so vital to entrepreneurial success. We are paired with universities because of how we operate, which is by offering information and expertise that educates business owners so they can make the most informed decisions for their company."

Focused on creating economic impact through the counseling and training of businesses with fewer than 500 employees, the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is part of a large cooperative network of Centers sponsored by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and directed by institutions of higher learning. Our SBDC serving northwest Missouri falls under the management umbrella of Northwest Missouri State University, which is located in Maryville, Mo. and Kansas City.

The Northwest SBDC covers the nine counties of Atchison, Nodaway, Worth, Gentry, Holt, DeKalb, Clinton, Andrew, and Buchanan. The main office in the region is located in St. Joseph within the offices of the St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce, however, services are offered on-site and via video chat or teleconference for convenience as well.

So what, exactly does our team do? The SBDC helps business owners and potential entrepreneurs meet today’s competitive challenges.

  • We provide pragmatic, individual counseling and coaching to small business firms and individuals regarding business issues such as management, marketing, and financial analysis throughout northwest Missouri.
  • Coordinate and conduct research into technical and general small business problems.
  • Conduct conferences and workshops at a nominal charge on various topics of interest to the owners of small businesses.

There is never a charge for the SBDC consulting services because all the services are subsidized by the U.S. SBA and the University to help grow the region’s economy.

Not only does the SBDC help hundreds of small business owners capitalize on their dreams, it is a great example of how government agencies, higher education, and nonprofit organizations can work together for the greater good.

Visit our statewide SBDC website for more information, learning and networking events, and free resources. You can also contact the SBDC at 816-364-4105 or email our regional director, Rebecca Lobina, at lobina@nwmissouri.edu. The office at 3003 Frederick Ave., St. Joseph, MO 64506 is typically open from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. on Monday - Friday.
